How to Install My Toilet Now

Install My Toilet Now! If your toilet is leaking, clogged, or just old and worn out, it’s time to replace it. It’s a heavy job, but it can be done in about a day with a helper and the right tools.

Start by removing the caps that connect your toilet to the floor. This reveals the bolts that will hold the new bowl.

Preparation

It’s a good idea to take a few moments before you begin the toilet installation process to ensure you have all the necessary tools and materials. This will save you time and avoid potential errors resulting in costly repairs.

First, shut off your water supply at the valve on the wall or floor. This can be done manually by turning the handle clockwise. Next, flush the toilet to remove any remaining water in the tank or bowl. Then, drain the toilet by placing a sponge in the soil pipe or using a bucket to collect any water in the tank or bowl.

Before you start working on the toilet, replacing your old braided water supply line with a new one is a good idea. This will help reduce leaks at the connection point and improve its lifespan. Additionally, purchasing an angle stop for the water line is a good idea. These can be found at most hardware stores and are usually covered with white caps.

Bolts/Install My Toilet Now!

Long anchor bolts hold down a toilet with nuts that extend out of the floor flange. The bolts have keyhole-like flange slots on each side, and toilets often have decorative plastic caps hiding bolt heads. These caps often fall off, or the bolts may spin and become stuck.

If you can’t loosen a bolt by hand with pliers, apply a lubricant such as WD-40 or a liquid wrench. If the bolts don’t budge, try a mini hacksaw to cut the nuts off. Be careful not to cut the toilet or a sewage pipe below it.

Once the bolts are removed, carefully lift the toilet onto a tarp or large towel. Examine the flange area: is the floor soaked or rotten? Is the flange cracked or severely rusted? Are there a hundred dollar bills rolled up next to the flange (an old plumber’s trick)? You’ll probably need to replace the wax ring and install new bolts.

Caulking/Install My Toilet Now!

Caulking is vital to keeping your home healthy, watertight, and protected from drafts. It is an essential home maintenance skill that most people don’t consider until it’s too late. It’s simple but requires patience and practice to get it right. Cutting the tip of the caulking tube at an angle and going slow will help make it easier to do correctly.

Once the bolts are tightened, flush and check for leaks around the toilet’s base and where the tank and bowl meet. You should not have any leaks if you’ve done an excellent job.

If the toilet rocks, use plastic shims in low spots to stop the rocking. Then run a bead of silicone caulk around the toilet’s base to create a watertight seal. Caulking and sealant are similar products used to seal joints or gaps in stationary building materials like walls, window frames, and doors. Choose a caulking product that is safe for bathroom use and mildewcide resistant (such as DAP Kwik Seal Kitchen and Bath Adhesive Caulk). Most caulking takes days to cure, so don’t mop the floor until then.

Installation

Installing a toilet seems like an intimidating DIY project, but it’s deceptively simple. And unlike hanging a picture, screwing up your toilet installation has more significant consequences.

After you remove the water supply, set your new toilet in place on its flange bolts and press down to compress the wax seal or toilet bowl gasket. Add plastic washers, metal washers, and nuts to the closet bolts and tighten them with a wrench — not too much, however, or you could crack the porcelain. If your toilet seat hinges have exposed bolt ends, cut them off with a hacksaw and snap the lid covers onto their place.

Toilet Water Supply Lines

Now you can reattach your water supply line and test for leaks by slowly turning on the water and flushing, if you find any, caulk where the water supply line connects to the tank and between the base of the bowl and floor. Once you’re done, you can reattach the tank and enjoy your new toilet.
