The Ultimate Guide to Setting Up a Toilet. A toilet’s water supply line, tank, and base should be fully connected. After that, slowly turn on the water and check for leaks in three places: where the tank connects to the bowl, where the tank meets the floor, and around the water supply line.

Lower the toilet base onto the closet flange, aligning its bolt holes with closet bolts. Then, press firmly to flatten the wax ring and cover the bolts with plastic caps.

Here are some toilet parts to choose from

The Bowl: The Ultimate Guide to Setting Up a Toilet

The Ultimate Guide to Setting Up a Toilet. The toilet bowl is one of the most familiar components, but the parts inside are often overlooked. For this reason, it’s essential to understand what each piece does and how to install it correctly. The bottom of the toilet bowl is attached to a pipe that angles downward, called a siphon tube. This limits the height of water in the bowl and helps prevent sewer gas from entering the home. Waste and water flow through the tube into a sewer pipe each time you flush the toilet.

To start, remove the tank bolts from the top of your toilet and set them aside on a towel. Then, cut through the caulk seal around the toilet’s base with a blade and remove the caps and nuts from the closet bolts (Image 1). Hand-tighten these bolts to hold your toilet on the floor, but don’t over-tighten, or you could crack your toilet.

The Tank: The Ultimate Guide to Setting Up a Toilet

The tank stores the water that comes into the toilet after a flush. The water is sent to the toilet bowl via a fill valve when the handle arm lowers. The float on top of the tank signals this and sets how much water is put into the toilet bowl when you flush.

When it comes to replacing the toilet tank, it’s best to do so on a clean, flat surface so you don’t need the new one. To do this, first shut off the water supply to your toilet by turning the valve around the back of it, usually found on the left side.

Next, loosen the nuts on the water supply line connecting to the tank from underneath with a wrench. If the nuts look corroded or are difficult to turn, spray them with penetrating oil before you loosen them. You’ll need to remove the old water tank.

The seat

Whether you want a new seat for a more finished look or to minimize the chance of unwanted bacteria or critters taking up residence, installing a toilet seat is a pretty simple job. It just requires some standard tools and a little time to get it right.

Start by locating the two bolts that attach the seat to the bowl. They may be concealed by plastic caps at the back of the seat, and you’ll need to crouch down or get on the floor to access them. Pop the caps open and use a screwdriver to remove the bolts. You may also need to hold a nut on the underside of the seat using an adjustable wrench.

With the bolts and nuts removed, lift off the old seat and set it aside. Next, measure the distance between the bolt holes at the back of the bowl. This will help you decide whether to purchase a round or elongated toilet seat.

The flange

The flange is the piece that connects your toilet to the sewer line. You should install this before setting the toilet in place so there are no leaks.

To install the flange, first remove the wax seal from the drainpipe. You should also block up the pipe, which will help prevent sewer gases from escaping and prevent you from accidentally dropping tools down the pipe. Work with latex gloves, and make sure you wash up afterward.

Next, insert a new flange onto the floor, aligning the flange bolt holes with the marks you made on the floor. The flange should be set at least 12 inches from the wall if you have a standard rough-in pipe. You should also use a PVC primer on the flange to help ensure it’s straight. Finally, put a wax ring on the flange, ensuring it’s completely centered. It’s a good idea to have several sizes of wax rings in your toolkit. https://www.youtube.com/embed/R1xcwNItsFg
